Last week I had the pleasure of taking part in Helen Walkley‘s “Presence of Mind in Motion” intensive. What a wonderful way to start the New Year!
Helen has a gentle and intuitive way of guiding her students into her somatic practise, which is informed by Laban Movement Analysis and somatic Movement Patterning. It was nice to hear words I recognized- language about space and dynamics that feels familiar to me from my time at Trinity Laban. I appreciate the sensitivity of her practise, and I felt myself opening up to new sensations and a more wholistic approach towards moving.
For the first time I really connected with the fitness balls that she uses in floorwork. I found it helped me hone in on how gravity affects patterning and surprised me with its complexity. I just want to spend more time with one of those balls!
It was a great way to reconnect with where my body is at, and test the limits of my strength following an injury.
